Buffs, Bandanas and Gaiters: 5 Clothing Accessories That Will Make Traveling More Comfortable
Posted on
When you are traveling or going on outdoor adventures, certain clothing accessories can be just as important as your main clothes in keeping you comfortable. Something as simple as a scarf will keep you safe and warm when it’s chilly, a hat can prevent sunburn and a pair of gloves can save your hands from frostbite.
When you pack for your next trip, here are five clothing accessories that will make traveling more comfortable.
1. Neck Gaiter For Neck & Head Protection
A neck gaiter, also called a neck warmer or a buff, is one of the most versatile clothing accessories you can bring with you. In its full form, it provides sun, wind and cold protection to the neck and lower half of the face. It can also be used to keep out dust, debris, sand and bugs.
You can wrap the tube-shaped garment around just your neck and use it as a neckband to keep out the cold or sun. You can also wrap it around your forehead as a headband to catch sweat and keep hair out of your face.
A neck gaiter is not just practical; it’s also a stylish addition to your ensemble. You can easily rock it around town without feeling out of place.
Tip: Make sure you pick a gaiter that’s breathable, wicks away sweat and feels soft against your skin. Merino wool makes for the best material for a neck gaiter.
2. A Bandana if You Need Something Lighter
A neck gaiter is useful in cold or wet weather conditions, or when the weather is unpredictable and you need to be ready for anything.
But if you expect mostly warm weather, a gaiter can be too heavy and warm. We recommend a bandana instead. Also called a neckerchief or a neck scarf, a bandana is a lighter alternative to a gaiter. It keeps you warm in moderately cool weather, provides sun protection for your neck and keeps you comfortable when the wind picks up.
When you are outdoors, you can also wear a bandana to protect your neck against bugs and insects.
Similar to a gaiter, a bandana is quite versatile. You can wear it as a headband and even use it as a hair covering or hair band. A bandana also works great as a fashion accessory.
3. Leg Gaiters for Wet Conditions
We’ve talked about neck gaiters. There are also leg gaiters. They have the same tubular structure as neck gaiters, but narrower.
Leg gaiters are essential when hiking, running or doing any activity in wet or snowy conditions. They cover your lower legs and the top of your shoes. This prevents moisture, mud, debris and snow from getting into your boots or getting onto your pants.
Leg gaiters vary widely when it comes to design. You can find lightweight ankle-high gaiters perfect for trail running and moderately wet conditions. There are also heavy duty gaiters that go higher up your leg and are ideal for deep snow, bogs and mountaineering.
4. Hat/Cap for Style and Sun Protection
No matter the season, always pack a hat or cup that will protect you from the sun. In the spring and summer, a hat keeps out the sun’s heat and UV rays. In the colder months, a hat will protect your eyes and face from the sun’s glare and UV.
If you prefer a baseball cap, we recommend the Hercleon Kronos adventure hat. It is waterproof, windproof and even blocks UV rays. You can also get a round brimmed sun hat.
5. Thermal/Insulated Socks for Winter Travel
If you are traveling during the colder months or if your feet tend to get cold in any weather, pack a pair or two of thermal socks. These are not just useful for outdoor adventures; they are also great for regular travel. Thermal socks can also help you sleep a lot better especially if your feet get cold at night.
Thermal socks are usually made with a thick insulating material like fleece or wool. 100% merino wool socks are the best for warmth since they don't get too hot and they keep your feet dry.
