Spring to Winter: The Best Bed Sheets for Year Round Comfort
Posted on
Some sheets such as linen and lightweight silk are perfect for summer, while others like sateen cotton and flannel keep you comfortably warm in the colder months. But if you don't want to keep switching sheets each season, you can get all-season bed sheets that keep you comfortable all year round.
What to Look For When Buying All-season Bed Sheets
- Breathability — breathability is not just important for summer sheets; it also matters during the colder months. Breathable sheets keep you from overheating (which can happen even in winter) and reduce sweating at night.
- Sweat-wicking — good quality year-round sheets should be able to wick or absorb moisture from your skin to keep you dry. This is especially important if you get night sweats.
- Soft and gentle — get high quality sheets that are soft and gentle on the skin.
Best All-Season Bed Sheets
1. Best for Hot Sleepers: Percale Cotton
If you naturally sleep hot even in the colder months, we recommend percale cotton sheets. These are cotton sheets with a more open type of weave that provides more cooling and breathability. Percale cotton sheets have a crisp and cool feel.
Thread count matters — to a point — when it comes to year-round comfort. For percale sheets, the ideal thread count is between 250 and 400 depending on how hot you sleep.
If you are a hot sleeper, choose a lower thread count (250-300) as it allows more air through. If you get chilly in winter, 300-400 TC percale sheets will keep you warm without overheating.
2. Best for Warmth: Sateen Cotton
If you tend to get cold most months of the year, we recommend sateen cotton sheets. Sateen sheets (not to be confused with synthetic satin sheets) have a tighter weave which makes them softer and denser.
While sateen cotton sheets are still more breathable than polyester sheets, they trap a bit more heat compared to percale cotton sheets. So they are ideal if you are looking for sheets that will keep you warm all year round.
We recommend sateen sheets with a thread count between 300 and 600, depending on how cool or warm you want to feel. Anything over 600 will be too heavy and hot especially in the warmer months.
3. Best Luxury: Silk
If you want the softest, most luxurious sheets you can get, go with 100% natural mulberry silk sheets. Silk has excellent temperature regulation properties. In the summer, it’s breathability and sweat-wicking power keeps you cool. In the winter, it acts as an insulator to keep you warm.
Like cotton sheets, silk sheets also have a thread count. But we call it momme. Silk sheets with a momme between 22 and 30 are ideal for all seasons. If you easily get cold even in the warmer months, go with a higher momme. If you are a hot sleeper, stick to the lower range between 22 and 25.
Also make sure they are grade A sheets as these are the softest compared to grades B and C.
4. Best for Night Sweats: Linen
If you sweat a lot at night, you need sheets that combine superior cooling power and moisture wicking capability. The best sheets that meet these requirements are linen sheets.
Linen sheets are more absorbent than cotton, and they dry faster as well. So they do a great job keeping you and the bed dry. This, combined with linen’s loose and breathable weave, helps a lot with temperature regulation.
In summer and spring, linen draws sweat from your skin, which helps you cool down. In winter and fall, its ability to stay dry provides insulation to keep you warm.
Other Good Options
- Bamboo sheets
- Tencel sheets (made from eucalyptus)
- Modal sheets
- Poly-cotton sheets — not as good as 100% cotton sheets but better than polyester sheets.
- Hemp sheets — a great alternative to linen if you are looking for natural and durable bed sheets.
