5 Luxury Bed Sheets To Buy If Budget Is Not an Issue
Posted on
If you don't mind spending a bit of money, there are plenty of premium bed sheets to choose from. Most luxury bed sheets are made from natural fibers like cotton and silk. They not only feel softer, they also provide a better sleeping experience thanks to their increased breathability and moisture-wicking.
Here are our best luxury sheets recommendations.
1. Mulberry Silk Bed Sheets
Silk sheets are some of the most luxurious sheets you can get. They are ultra soft, hypoallergenic and great for sensitive skin. They also keep you cool and wick away sweat, making them particularly comfortable for hot sleepers and warm summer nights.
Silk is made from the cocoon of moth caterpillars known as silkworms. The caterpillars make their cocoons using silk filament. The cocoons are harvested by hand and the silk thread carefully unraveled. The threads are then used to make silk fabrics and bedding.
The painstaking process of making silk is the main reason 100% natural silk bed sheets are so expensive. But if you are shopping for the most comfortable sheets, they are worth it.
Tip: Silk fabrics are categorized into grades A, B and C, with additional subcategories in each grade. For the most luxurious bed sheets, get those that are made with grade 6A. They are the highest quality silk sheets.
2. 300-600 TC Cotton Bed Sheets
Cotton bed sheets are available in a wide range of price points. You can get everything from cheap cotton sheets that cost less than $50 for a set to high-end Egyptian cotton sheets that cost hundreds of dollars.
The main thing that separates regular and luxury cotton sheets is thread count. Cheaper sheets will typically have a 150-300 thread count. If you want soft, supple and luxurious cotton sheets, get those with a 300-600 thread count.
Forget those cotton sheets with crazy 1,000+ thread counts. Anything over 600 thread count is likely a marketing gimmick and you could end up with sheets that feel too heavy and hot.
The type of weave also matters. Sateen cotton sheets are softer, though they sleep a bit warmer. If you are a hot sleeper, percale cotton sheets are the best. They have a crispier feel, but still feel soft and luxurious.
Something else to check is the type of cotton the sheets are made from. The best cotton sheets are made from long staple cotton. It produces sheets that are softer and stronger. If you can, also go for organic cotton bed sheets. They are better for your health and the environment.
3. Linen Bed Sheets
If you want the softest bed sheets you can get, silk and cotton are the best options. But if you want bed sheets that are cool, moisture-wicking and highly durable, then linen sheets are what you are looking for. They are made from the flax plant.
Linen sheets can feel a bit stiff and rough when new, but they get softer with each wash. You can also get pre-washed linen sheets that come already feeling soft. That said, they never get quite as soft as cotton or silk.
Linen sheets have excellent breathability and sweat-wicking performance, making them a good choice for year-round comfort. They also last a lot longer than both cotton and silk sheets.
4. Hemp Bed Sheets
Hemp bed sheets are comparable in many ways to linen sheets. They are 100% plant based (they are made from hemp plants), they have the same stiff and rough feel initially, and they get softer with each wash.
Similar to linen, hemp sheets are also cool, breathable and great at wicking away sweat. Hemp sheets are also just as long lasting as linen.
5. Rayon Bed Sheets
If you want luxury bed sheets that are not too expensive, we recommend rayon bed sheets. These include semi-synthetic sheets made from plants or wood pulp such as bamboo, eucalyptus and beech.
Bamboo bed sheets, in particular, have become a hugely popular choice for people looking for a cheaper alternative to 100% natural sheets. Other popular rayon sheets include Tencel and Lyocell.
Rayon bed sheets such as bamboo are soft (sometimes even softer than cotton), highly breathable and good at absorbing sweat from your skin. For the best luxury and comfort, look for 100% rayon bed sheets. Many of the ones you’ll find are a mix of rayon and polyester.
