5 Ways to Layer A Henley Shirt For Style and Comfort
Posted on
Thanks to its snug fit and collarless design, a Henley shirt is perfect for layering under other clothes like a shirt or jacket.
Layering a Henley shirt will keep you warm when outdoors or during chilly weather, while giving you an option to quickly shed off extra layers when it gets too warm. Long sleeved thermal Henley shirts are perfect for this.
You can also layer a Henley shirt purely for style. The rounded neck and buttoned placket goes great with an open shirt, leather jacket or even a cardigan.
Here are five ideas for layering a Henley shirt, whether it’s for comfort or style.
1. With a Button-up Shirt
If you are looking for a lightweight outfit idea that won’t get you too hot, we recommend layering a Henley with a button-up shirt.
Don’t wear a dress shirt as it will look awkward matched with a casual Henley. Casual button up shirts such as a flannel shirt or a denim shirt layer best with Henleys. The contrast between the smooth texture of the Henley with the rougher texture of a denim or flannel shirt makes for a great pairing.
You can also wear a patterned shirt over a plain Henley shirt.
If you are going for a smarter or more formal look, button up the shirt but not all the way to the top. You want the placket of the Henley shirt to still be visible. It adds a nice touch to the outfit.
For a more casual or street-style look, leave the shirt unbuttoned.
2. With a Casual Jacket
If you want to feel warmer while still pulling off a casual look, wear your Henley under a casual jacket. A leather jacket pairs particularly well with a Henley shirt, creating a manly ‘I am about to ride off into the sunset on a motorbike’ look.
Any casual jacket also goes great with a Henley including denim jackets, bomber jackets and varsity jackets. Wear the jacket fully open or partly zipped (or buttoned) up. Or you can fully zip it up for maximum warmth.
Tip: If you want to layer a Henley shirt with a jacket but are concerned about overheating, wear a half jacket instead. You can wear it with either a short sleeve or long sleeve Henley.
3. With a Blazer or Sport Jacket
If you are going for smart casual, then a blazer or sport jacket is the best way to layer a Henley shirt. This combo is great for weddings, dinner dates or laid back business meetings.
Button up the jacket for a more formal look or leave it open for a relaxed style.
Make sure you don't wear a Henley shirt with a suit jacket. It will look off and awkward. Suit jackets are only meant to be worn with suits.
Blazers and sport jackets have different cut, texture and sometimes patterns that make them casual. That’s why they look great with similarly casual shirts like a Henley, Polo or a regular tee.
4. With a Sweater or Cardigan
Going for a chic look? Layer the Henley shirt with a sweater or cardigan.
A cardigan is best for warmer weather since you can unbutton or unzip it to feel cooler. It also shows off the Henley shirt underneath.
If you pair a Henley shirt with a sweater, look for a sweater that has a scooped or V neck so that the buttons of the Henley are still visible.
5. With a Hoodie
A hoodie and Henley matchup is great if you are going for a super casual look. It’s also great for staying warm especially if you pair the hoodie with a long sleeved thermal Henley.
A zip-up hoodie works best since you can open it partially or all the way to keep the Henley shirt underneath visible.
