4 Reasons You Should Always Pack a Long Sleeved Shirt When Traveling
Posted on
As a frequent traveler, I have come to realize that long sleeved shirts and t-shirts are some of the most underrated items of clothing when it comes to versatility. From style to warmth and even sun protection, long sleeved shirts do the work of multiple types of clothing.
Whether you are traveling to a new city or going on an outdoor adventure, I highly recommend packing one or two long sleeved shirts in your luggage. Here are 5 reasons they are so handy.
1. Versatile Style
Long sleeved shirts, whether it’s a t-shirt, Henley or sweatshirt, absolutely smash standard t-shirts when it comes to style versatility.
You can comfortably wear a long-sleeved shirt while hiking, and still rock it to a bbq party. With the right pair of pants, you can make it formal enough to wear to the office.
This is one of the reasons a long sleeved shirt is handy when traveling. You can wear it, no matter what situation you find yourself in whether it’s exploring the city, relaxing at the beach or enjoying night life.
Long sleeve shirts also go well with a wide variety of pants including jeans, khakis, shorts and dress pants. Depending on what you pair it with, you can go from beach-ready to a semi-formal fit suitable for a business meeting.
2. Perfect for any Weather
Long sleeved shirts are also versatile when it comes to weather friendliness.
In the sun, a long sleeved shirt provides extra protection to your skin from the harsh sunshine. As long as the shirt is breathable, it can keep you cooler compared to a regular short sleeve t-shirt, while also keeping out some of the damaging UV.
If you know you’ll be hiking or walking for hours in the sun, definitely pack a long sleeved shirt. In addition to being breathable, make sure it is also moisture-wicking. It will keep your skin from getting clammy with sweat.
Long sleeved shirts are also great for colder weather. The extra coverage keeps you warm when the wind picks up or temperatures drop. This makes long sleeved shirts handy for unpredictable weather conditions.
3. Great for Layering
If you are looking for even more warmth, long sleeved shirts are also great for layering. They work well as a base layer under other clothes like a sweater, jacket or button up shirt.
A regular t-shirt can still work as a base layer, but a long sleeved shirt is a lot warmer because it covers more skin.
For better protection against the cold, particularly when going outdoors, look for a thermal shirt. These types of long sleeved shirts are designed specifically to retain warmth.
4. Protection from Bugs and Bushes
Another reason to pack a long sleeved shirt when going outdoors is protection from bugs and bushes. The long sleeves will save you from countless bites and scratches.
A long sleeved shirt is also handy if you are traveling to a tropical place with lots of bugs like mosquitoes. A long sleeved shirt combined with long pants will protect your skin from bites without having to resort to wearing a heavy jacket or sweater.
Types of Long Sleeved Shirts
In addition to the traditional button down shirts, there are many other types of long sleeved shirts that are great for traveling.
- Long sleeved t-shirts - these are a version of regular t-shirts. They are great if you need a light weight shirt. Our long sleeve HercShirt is particularly breathable and moisture wicking. It’s also anti-odor, ensuring you stay fresh when you travel. You can wear it multiple times without having to wash it and it will not smell.
- Polo shirt - most Polo shirts are short sleeved, but you can also find long sleeved ones. A long sleeved Polo is a good buy if you want a smarter style for a dinner, business meeting or wedding party.
- Henley shirt - a Henley shirt is like a Polo but without the collar. It has a round neck and a placket with 3-4 buttons. A Henley shirt is not as formal as a Polo but also not as casual as a t-shirt. You can wear it outdoors, to a party or around town.
- Sweatshirt - a sweatshirt is a good choice if you are traveling in colder weather. That’s because sweatshirts are generally heavier than long sleeved t-shirts. You can even layer a sweatshirt over a lighter long sleeve t-shirt for extra warmth.
