How to Transition Your Bedroom from Winter to Spring
Posted on
The weather is warmer, the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing. As we transition from winter to spring, it’s time to make some changes in your bedroom as well, both for aesthetic and practical purposes.
In addition to brightening up your room to match the season, it’s important to adjust to the changing weather. Here are five changes you can make to your bedroom for spring.
1. Switch to Cooler Bedding
With the temperatures beginning to rise, nights are going to get warmer. So it's time to switch out your extra-warm flannel sheets and thick duvet for lighter and more breathable bedding.
Linen, cotton, and bamboo sheets are excellent for breathability. They wick away sweat and keep you cool on warm nights. Switching to cooler sheets is especially important if you are a hot sleeper. Sleeping too hot can ruin your sleep.
For those who get hot at night, we recommend the Hercleon summer edition Jax sheets. They are optimized for cooling and will keep you comfortable throughout spring and summer.
If you have an all-season duvet, you don't need to change it. But if you were using a thick winter duvet, it can make you too hot and sweaty in spring. Switch to a lighter duvet or comforter.
Also consider whether you need to cool your mattress. A memory foam mattress might feel cozy in winter, but get too hot in spring. A cooling mattress topper or pad can help improve cooling and breathability.
2. Brighten Up Your Bedroom
Let your bedroom mirror the colors of spring. You don't have to overhaul your entire bedroom. Simple changes like switching to a brighter duvet cover, adding a patterned quilt on top of the bed, or using pastel curtains can transform a bedroom and make it springier.
You can also use artwork to brighten up the space. Look for a piece that features bold patterns or colors. A spring-themed piece featuring something like a lush landscape or flowers also works great.
All this is not just to make your bedroom pretty. Brightening up your sleeping space can lift your moods, reduce stress and help you fall asleep easier. It can also help push away any remaining winter blues.
3. Bring the Outside In
Another way to spring-up your bedroom is bringing a bit of the outside in in forms of plants. Some good choices include a rubber plant, lavender, and Boston fern. But be careful if you have allergies. Some indoor house plants can trigger allergy symptoms.
Also be careful not to overwater the plants as that can cause mold, which you definitely don't want in the bedroom especially if you have existing respiratory problems.
You don't have to fill every corner of the bedroom with plants. Just a couple of well placed ones can make the bedroom feel more relaxing. And if allergies and mold are concerns, you can always use fake plants instead. Look for high quality ones that look realistic.
4. Refresh Your Bedroom With Spring Scents
Another great way to transition your bedroom from winter to spring is with scents. There are some scents that bring out the warmth and liveliness of bliss. These include jasmine, raspberry, rose and bergamot.
The best way to bring these scents into your bedroom is using natural essential oils. Add a few drops into an essential oil diffuser. If you don't want the added humidity from a diffuser, add the essential oil to pieces of cotton wool and place them around the bedroom.
5. Reduce Soft Furnishings
During winter, adding soft textures and furnishings around the bedroom adds some much-needed warmth. With spring here, consider cutting back on some of those furnishings such as rugs, poufs, and runners.
This is not just useful for making your bedroom more spring-like, it has a practical benefit. Soft surfaces trap moisture and can encourage the growth of mold. They also accumulate allergens like pollen and dust.
So reducing the number of soft surfaces whether on the floor or on furniture can make your bedroom healthier.
Final Thoughts
A couple more things to consider adding to your bedroom this spring is a dehumidifier and an air purifier.
A dehumidifier is helpful if you live in an area that gets humid in spring and summer. A dehumidifier will prevent mold from growing inside the house. Lowering the humidity to between 30 and 50% also makes breathing easier and is great for your skin.
An air purifier is helpful if you have allergies. Spring is peak allergy season with pollen, dust, mold spores and other allergens filling the air. You cannot completely prevent allergens from getting in your home. So if you are sensitive to pollen or other substances, arm yourself with a HEPA purifier. Shop for one that runs quietly so that it doesn't disrupt your sleep.
