6 Personal Hygiene Tips for Men Who Sweat a Lot
Posted on
If you naturally sweat more than most people, staying fresh and clean is a challenge. Even if you take a shower in the morning, you are probably already sweating buckets by midday.
You have to constantly worry about body odor, your skin health (sweat acne, eczema etc) and your general hygiene.
In this post, we discuss the best personal hygiene tips for men who sweat a lot. These solutions will help you smell fresh all day, keep your skin healthy and boost your self esteem.
1. Take Multiple Showers A Day
For people who sweat a normal amount, one shower a day is usually enough to stay fresh. If you sweat a lot, you’ll have to accept a life of multiple showers a day.
At the very least take a shower in the morning and another in the evening. This reduces sweat build up and keeps body odor down. It also protects your skin from breakouts and infections.
If you sweat a lot during the day to the point where you feel self conscious, consider squeezing in another shower in the middle of the day. You can do it at work, at a nearby gym and wherever you can. A midday shower can be especially refreshing on a hot day.
If a shower is not possible, body wipes or water wipes are also great. Use them on areas where you sweat or smell the most.
2. Wear Anti-odor Clothing
What you wear is very important when it comes to staying fresh. We have an entire article with dressing tips for people who sweat a lot. Some ideas include wearing a base layer, choosing sweat-wicking fabrics and wearing anti-odor clothes.
The last one on anti-odor clothes is especially important. Some types of clothes, specifically those made from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, will have you stinking to high heavens in no time.
Clothes made from natural fabrics like wool, linen, silk, bamboo and cotton have the best odor resistance. That’s because natural materials don't hold onto the oil compounds that odor-causing bacteria love to feed on.
For even better protection, wear antibacterial clothes. Hercleon has several of these including the popular HercShirt t-shirt. There’s also a Polo version if you want something more formal.
The HercShirt is made with bacteria-fighting fiber, so it doesn't smell even when you sweat. It also helps that the material is highly breathable and moisture wicking. It’s a guaranteed way to smell fresh all day long.
3. Use Deodorants and Antiperspirants
Depending on the severity of your sweating, you may need extra-strength or clinical-grade deodorant or antiperspirant.
If you are wondering what the difference between the two is, deodorants work by killing the sweaty odor, while antiperspirants reduce how much you sweat and eliminate odor as well.
Remember that these products are not just for your armpits. You can get a whole body antiperspirant that you can apply even on sensitive areas. There are also antiperspirant sprays and powders specifically for feet, if you sweat a lot from there.
4. Frequent Laundry
If you sweat a lot, you don't have the luxury of repeating clothes. Make sure anything you wear is clean and fresh.
Also do your laundry often. Leaving it too long in the laundry basket can cause odors to set in. When you do laundry, do not use fabric softener. We wrote about this recently in an article on the problems with fabric softeners. They are bad for your skin and can make odors worse.
5. Watch Your Diet and Lifestyle
Certain lifestyle choices can make your sweat more than usual, or make your sweat smell worse. Two big changes that will keep you fresh and clean is reducing your alcohol intake and cutting out smoking.
Your diet also matters. Spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, meats and sugary foods can cause worse body odor. Reduce your consumption of these foods.
Other lifestyle changes that can help include drinking plenty of water, getting plenty of sleep (sleep deprivation can worsen sweating, including night sweats), and reducing your stress levels (stress can induce sweating).
6. Take Extra Care of Your Skin
Finally, take extra care of your skin. Sweating constantly is not good for your skin. It can cause sweat acne, where sweat and other debris such as dead skin cells clog skin pores and lead to breakouts. Sweating can also trigger eczema flare ups.
Water only is not enough to keep your skin clean. Get a good quality cleanser and use it twice a day. Exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week and choose quality skin care products that won’t clog your pores.
