7 Life Changing Products For People With Night Sweats
Posted on
Night sweats are not only uncomfortable, they can ruin your sleep and lead to chronic sleep deprivation. If you sweat a lot at night, whether from overheating, hormones or some other cause, here are the best products to manage the sweating and improve your sleep.
1. Sweat-wicking Bed Sheets
Your choice of bed sheets can turn your night sweats into a nothingburger or make it twice as bad. The worst kind of sheets are those that trap sweat, leaving your skin all clammy and uncomfortable. It’s also bad for your skin health. Leaving sweat on the skin for too long can cause sweat acne.
Get bed sheets that absorb or wick away sweat. They keep your skin dry and can help you sweat less by keeping you cooler. We recommend bed sheets made from natural fibers like cotton, silk, bamboo, linen and Tencel.
2. Breathable Bedding
To stay cool and reduce how much you sweat, get breathable bedding. In addition to preventing overheating, breathable linen allows sweat to evaporate much faster to keep you dry.
Again, natural fibers make for the most breathable bedding whether it’s sheets, duvet or pillowcase. Some of the best cooling bedding is made from linen, wool, cotton, silk, down and feathers.
When it comes to the comforter, make sure it’s not too heavy. Even a down comforter can make you too hot and sweaty if it’s too heavy. If you get hot easily in bed, leading to night sweats, get a lightweight summer or all-season comforter.
3. Antibacterial Sheets
The problem with night sweats is not just discomfort. They also make your bed unhygienic. As sweat accumulates on your bedding, it attracts bacteria, causing your bedding to get smelly and unhealthy.
This is one of the reasons why you should change your bed linen more regularly if you have night sweats (at least twice a week).
For improved hygiene or if you don't want to change your sheets that often, get antibacterial bed sheets like our own Jax sheets. They actively fight off odor and acne-causing bacteria. You can go longer between washes and your sheets will still smell fresh.
4. Bed Cooling System
If your night sweats are caused by overheating, because of hot flashes, climate or you are a naturally hot sleeper, a bed cooling system will help you sleep cool and sweat less.
There are two types of bed cooling systems: those that blow chilled air under your sheets like BedJet and those that circulate chilled water on your bed like Sleepme’s ChiliPad.
These bed cooling systems can cool you a lot more than just breathable bedding on its own. You can even dial in your preferred sleep temperature. By the way, most of them also have a warming option handy for chilly weather.
5. Cooling Mattress Topper/Pad
Bed cooling systems are great for hot sleepers and night sweats, but they are pricey with some of them being just as expensive as a new mattress.
If you are looking for a cheaper way to sleep cool and sweat less, try a cooling mattress topper or pad. It can be especially helpful if the reason you are sweating a lot at night is your heat-trapping mattress.
The best cooling mattress toppers for night sweats are made from natural latex, wool, or down. Microfiber mattress pads with a breathable cotton, bamboo, line or silk cover also offer decent cooling.
6. A Mattress Protector and Pillow Protector
Years of night sweats will leave your mattress and pillow smelly, stained and full of mold, bacteria and other kinds of gunk.
Everyone should use a waterproof mattress protector, but people with night sweats need it most to keep moisture from reaching the mattress.
Also protect your pillow with a waterproof pillow protector to keep it from getting yellow, smelly and unhygienic.
7. Breathable Sleepwear (or None At All)
It’s not just your bedding you need to think about. Your choice of sleepwear can also help with night sweats or make them worse.
Generally, avoid synthetic PJs such as those made from polyester. They get hot easily and can make you sweat more.
Pajamas and sleepwear made from natural materials like cotton, silk and wool are the best for sleeping cool and reducing night sweats.
Even better, ditch the PJs and sleep naked. There are a lot of pros to sleeping nude, including feeling cooler and better sweat wicking (but make sure you have good quality sheets).
