Best Laundry Tips for People Who Hate Doing Laundry
Posted on
There are plenty of people, like me, who don't really look forward to laundry day. Then there are those who really hate laundry with a passion.
Unfortunately, unless you don't mind paying someone to do laundry for you or taking your clothes to a laundromat, we still need clean clothes. But you can make laundry a less tiresome and tedious chore with the following tips.
1. Do Less Laundry
Duh! If you hate laundry, do less of it. But how exactly do you do that without leaving mountains of dirty clothes in your hamper?
Well, for one, not all clothes need to be washed after each wear. You should wear items like shirts and underwear only once before washing them. But for other items like jeans, coats, jackets, pajamas and sweaters can be worn a few times before you need to launder them.
Just make sure you hang them somewhere airy after wearing them to ensure they stay fresh.
As for bedding, you only need to wash linen once or twice a week. Your comforter can go a couple of months as long as you use a duvet cover. And for towels, once or twice a week is enough.
Another way to do less laundry is to get Hercleon self-cleaning clothes like the HercShirt and HercSocks. They are made with a special antibacterial material that fights off odor and infection-causing bacteria. You can wear the same t-shirt for days or even weeks without laundry and it will still smell fresh.
2. Do Smaller Loads of Laundry Instead of Having One Laundry Day
The biggest mistake you can make if you hate laundry is waiting to do all your laundry on a single day. For most people, this is usually Saturday or Sunday.
But often, you only end up hating laundry even more when you have to deal with a mountain of dirty laundry. All that sorting, washing, drying and folding becomes a tiresome day-long chore.
Try this instead. Have a laundry routine where you do small bits of laundry every day or every couple of days instead of lumping it all into a single day.
It is easier and faster to wash and fold smaller loads of laundry, so it doesn't feel as much of a chore. It might actually feel like you are doing less laundry.
Even better, plan your laundry based on the things you wash. You can have a laundry day for bedding, another for towels, another for your clothes and another for underwear.
3. Get a Bigger Washer and Dryer
If you still prefer having just one or two laundry days per week (or every two weeks), the other option is to get a bigger washer and dryer.
This lets you do all your laundry in as few loads as possible.
4. Get Multiple Hampers to Sort Laundry
Sorting clothes is one of the most tedious aspects of laundry, though not as bad as folding clothes. To make laundry days a bit easier, consider putting your dirty laundry in sorted hampers.
So you can have one hamper for bright colors, another for white, another for delicates and maybe another for linen and towels. Having pre-sorted laundry makes laundering a lot easier. You can just empty the contents of one hamper directly into the washing machine without sorting.
It also makes it easy to have a laundry routine. If it’s laundry day for bed linen, you already know which hamper you are emptying.
5. Make it More Fun
You can make the tedious aspects of laundry like sorting and folding less so by doing something fun. Listen to music or a podcast, enjoy an audio book, watch a movie, make a long call to a friend or have someone keep you company.
You’ll be surprised at how quickly time flies and how fast you get through the task when your mind is occupied. You can even schedule a specific podcast, TV show or any other activity for laundry day so that you can look forward to it.
